Steven Bibbs, 19, and Dashaun Davy, 17, were good friends, Cook County prosecutors said. But Bibbs stabbed Davy to death on an Evanston street two years ago, prosecutors argued in court this week.

Bibbs’ first degree murder trial started on Tuesday, and went to the jury on Thursday. But a few hours into deliberation, Bibbs agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a 20-year prison sentence, prosecutors said. He faced the possibility of 60 years behind bars if the jury returned with a guilty verdict, prosecutors said.

Bibbs and Davy and three other friends were driving around Evanston smoking pot and drinking in September of 2009 when Bibbs got mad at Davy for interrupting his story about a broken a cell phone, said prosecutors.

Bibbs and Davy got out of the car in the 9000 block of Ewing Street in Evanston, and started arguing about Bibbs “feeling disrespected,” then Bibbs stabbed Davy four times before running away, prosecutors said.

Bibbs returned minutes later and tried to resuscitate Davy, who was on the ground gasping for breath, according to the state.
