Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay doesn’t have an NBA lockout cure, but he has come up with a one-night remedy for the basketball fever that’s spreading in the region.
Gay will be host for an exhibition game next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the DeSoto Civic Center.
Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant, Washington Wizards guard John Wall, Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith and Houston Rockets guard Kyle Lowry have committed to play. Gay’s Grizzlies teammates Zach Randolph and O.J. Mayo, as well as Memphis basketball legend Penny Hardaway, will also participate.
“With us getting together it shows we want to play basketball,” Gay said Tuesday. “The perception is that we are holding out. It’s a lockout, not a strike. We want to play. But we want a fair deal, too.”
Additional players will be announced later this week.
All seats are $30 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. today. Tickets are available on ticketmaster.com, desotociviccenter.com, at the DeSoto Civic Center box office or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
Proceeds will benefit the Flight 22 Foundation, Gay’s non-profit organization that raises funds for childhood education.
“I look at my Twitter (account) and people always say you should bring a game to Memphis,” Gay said. “People want to see us play. … It’ll be great for this area to get (the Grizzlies) back on the court and do it for charity.”
