Michael Selleneit, 53, is now in Davis County jail on felony charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a semi-automatic handgun.
Police said in a statement that Selleneit and his wife previously reported that their Centerville neighbor Tony Pierce, 41, was “trying to get them on drugs or was trying to have sexual relations with Michael’s wife.â€
Police said they never found any evidence to support the claims.
Selleneit claimed Pierce had been “telepathically threatening” to kill him and his wife in addition to the alleged telepathic sexual assaults, according to jail documents obtained by the Salt Lake Tribune.
Selleneit, who faces up to life in prison if convicted, reportedly told detectives he shot Pierce in self-defense with intent to kill him.
He called 911 after the shooting and told police where to find his .380-caliber pistol, according to The Tribune.
The victim was airlifted from the scene and remains hospitalized.
Selleneit had been ordered to steer clear of guns after a felony conviction of forcible sexual abuse of a child in 1990, police said.
The shooting happened at 4:55 p.m. Sunday as Pierce was outside doing yard work while his 8-year-old daughter was inside the trailer, police said.
Pierce was struck twice, once in the leg and once in the back, with that bullet hitting several vital organs and the sack around his heart.
