22-year-old Corey Daniels admitted using his fists to punch the toddler in the chest, arms and legs and hitting her with a belt more than 36 times, the Arizona Republic reported.
He continued his brutal assault on the child even after she fell to the ground, according to court records.
The little girl, Dani Mayo, clung to life for two days but finally passed away in the hospital Saturday morning.
Daniels first told cops that Dani had choked on a hot dog and stopped breathing.
Doctors did not believe his version of events after finding the child had bleeding and swelling in her brain, and multiple skull fractures, according to reports.
Daniels also confessed to biting the young girl a few weeks prior in an attempt to discipline her after she urinated on herself, police said.
“The detectives told me it was one of the worst cases they have seen, and these are seasoned detectives,†Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson told the Arizona Republic.
