An autistic boy on Friday was found alive in a Virginia park where he had disappeared five days earlier, authorities said.
Robbie Wood Jr., 9, was taken to a hospital and has been reunited with his family, Hanover County (Virginia) sheriff’s Capt. Mike Trice said. He was foundnear a quarry about 2 miles from where the search had been focused, CNN affiliate WTVR reported.
Robbie had wandered from his father in the 80-acre North Anna Battlefield Park on Sunday, authorities said. He had been hiking with his his father, younger brother and his father’s girlfriend at the park, which is a Civil War battlefield, WTVR reported.
Robbie has autism and does not speak, which complicated the search, according to WTVR.
More than 1,000 volunteers searched for Robbie in the park this week, including 1,500 to 2,000 volunteers on Tuesday alone, Trice said. The volunteers joined about 300 professional searchers in the park and surrounding areas.
Hancock County officials are expected to reveal more details at a news conference Friday afternoon.
