Ta’Von McLaurin, 18, and a 15-year-old boy were arrested at their homes on Monday night after they were caught on surveillance cameras prowling the halls of Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, N.C., carrying a .22 rifle, a local ABC television affiliate reported.
Authorities say the 15-year-old, who was not identified because of his age, shot freshman Catilyn Abercrombie, also 15, as she was eating with friends outside the school at around 1 p.m.
Witnesses told the station they heard the shots and saw Abercrombie fall to the ground bleeding, but no one saw the gunman.
Abercrombie was rushed to a local hospital, where she had surgery on Monday afternoon.
She was reported to be in stable condition, nodding her head to questions but unable to speak, the TV station said.
Cape Fear and another nearby school were closed on Monday afternoon after authorities searched the area and found no signs of the shooter.
