A gunman pumped three bullets Thursday into the upper body of a 65-year-old woman, who then crawled under a large tree and laid down, her life wasting away, but her eyes wide open.
The woman, who was shot about 11:50 a.m. in Coney Island, later died at Coney Island Hospital, police said. Her name was not immediately released.
The tree that shaded her dying moments is near a park at W. 2nd St. and Sea Breeze Ave., police said.
“I heard three shots,” said Elena Ayzenberg, a merchant whose store is nearby. “I thought it was a car backfiring. Then a woman came into the store and told me to call the police. I ran outside and saw an elderly woman on the ground.
“She was lying on her back and her eyes were open.”
The gunman fled on a mountain bike, police said. The motive for the killing was not immediately clear, but detectives suspect it may have stemmed from domestic strife, police sources said. Investigators believe the woman knew her killer.
