All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony swung by the GQ cafeteria to give them the scoop on the NBA lockout, what it’s like being a reality TV star, and his fashion designer obsessions.
Check it out after the jump…
Carmelo Anthony is known for not wasting two things—dribbles and words. In the midst of pushing for an end to the NBA lockout, training everyday, and appearing in La La’s Full Court Life, a reality show starring his wife, La La, he’s keeping “everything business as usual.” A dozen oysters and a few tuna rolls at the Condé Nast cafeteria in, and Melo opened up about his next step.
GQ: Technically, you’re unemployed at the moment. What’s the lockout been like for you?
Carmelo Anthony: A lot of people think that as a player, during the lockout, you just have your whole day free. It’s not like that—especially for me. I wake up everyday, train in the morning from 9 a.m. to about 2 p.m. Then I have a business meeting here, have to meet this person there, it’s non-stop for me.
GQ: How do you think Derek Fisher is handling everything?
Carmelo Anthony:Â I think he’s been doing well! Especially now that he’s got all of us together as one. You don’t see anyone cracking or repeating something that someone is saying. We’re all on one page and we’re more powerful like that.
GQ: What’s the solution in your eyes?
Carmelo Anthony:Â Well I think at the end of the day they want a competitive balance across the board. I personally don’t see any way you can have a competitive balance if you don’t spend money. At the end of the day it’s all about money. It’s kind of taking the fun out of the game because we just want to play basketball.
GQ: When you hear about players like Tony Parker signing to play in France for only two grand a month, you definitely get the feeling that it’s for the love of the game.
Carmelo Anthony:Â Yeah. That right there just goes to show you that people aren’t really complaining about the money. People just want to play ball and that’s it. So it’s two-fold. You have people who are going to go overseas regardless due to the lockout and then you have people who are waiting like, “We’re going to see what happens.”
GQ: But what about Melo?
Carmelo Anthony:Â Me? I haven’t made a decision. I’ve been keeping hope; hopefully we get something done. But everyday I hear something different. I haven’t made a decision yet.
