Motorists frantically sent messages via twitter and text telling people to avoid the area due to the presence of the masked gunmen.

Reynaldo Escobar Perez, Veracruz State Attorney General, the bodies were left piled up on two trucks on the street, reported The Telegraph. Police also confirmed that seven victims had been identified. They all had criminal records and were part of organized crime.

While local media reported that three of the identified victims were among those who had escaped Veracruz prisons on Monday night, Escobar denied the reports.

The two men captured on Monday night admitted to being part of the Zeta drug cartel as well as taking place in the attack that lead to the incident.

Drug violence has claimed over 35,000 lives since 2006 in Mexico. The Gulf and Zetas drug cartels have been engaged in bloody conflict in Veracuz for a year. This recent incident is an indication of only how much worse the situation is getting.

Veracruz sits in an important route for drug trafficking as well as for immigrants from Central America heading north.
