According to San Bernardino Police Lt. Gwendolyn Waters, the killer approached on foot and fired multiple shots at the house before fleeing.
Police now suspect the killer might have been angry that another resident of the home intervened when the suspect was assaulting a different woman earlier in the day.
‘The suspect knew he was shooting at a pregnant woman,’ she added.
The 22-year-old woman, who has not been named, was hit in the neck. She is said to be five months pregnant.
More children and adults were inside the house at the time, but were not injured.
Piecing together witness accounts, police believe that a man living at the victims’ address saw the suspect assaulting the other woman on Monday and got involved, allowing the unidentified woman to escape, said San Bernardino police Lt. Gwendolyn Waters.
The suspect is the same man who later Monday opened fire on the home where the Good Samaritan lived, she said.
‘That appears to be our motive – that somebody from that residence did a good thing and intervened and tried to save another woman from being assaulted,’ Waters said at a news conference.
Police are searching for the suspect and want to speak to the woman who was assaulted and at least two other witnesses to the assault, she said.
A 3-year-old girl, Nylah Franco-Torrez, was struck in the head during the shooting and pronounced dead at a hospital late Monday.
The dead tot’s great grandmother Sophia Cardona said she was in the kitchen making tacos for her family when she heard the gunfire.
‘We lost one of our babies,’ she told the Los Angeles Times. ‘She was a sweet little girl.
