No more hurricanes around here pretty please!!! According to the National Hurricane Center, Katia intensified rapidly to become a Category 2 storm on Sunday as it spun through the Atlantic. Hit the jump for more details…
(CNN)–At 11 a.m. ET, Katia had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and was moving to the northwest at about 12 mph, the center said. It was 360 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.
“Additional strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Katia could become a major hurricane by Monday,” the center said.
Surf swells were primarily affecting the northern Lesser Antilles, but were expected to subside Monday. Swells could hit Bermuda in the coming days, the center said. “These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”
Katia’s likely path puts it on a trajectory northwest through the Atlantic, getting closer to the U.S. East Coast toward the end of the week.
