The legendary Pro skateboarder Tony Hawk suffered a non-debilitating oral maxillary injury during an August 23, 2011, stop along his Birdhouse MIA to NYC tour that left his iconic grin in disarray. About the accident
According to his Twitter posts, Hawk received the injury to his upper row of teeth while at the Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida, during the execution of a doubles set with skater Tony Staab. The fateful Kona Skatepark stop featured a skate demo with Hawk and other members of the Birdhouse Skate Team. Hawk’s maxillary injury to his central incisor is one of the more common dental injuries suffered by sports athletes. Family Gentle Dental Care, a proponent of wearing mouth guards during sports activities, notes on its website that “more than 5 million teeth are knocked out each year” and that those injuries result in an estimated $500 million in dental care expenditures. In addition to dental injuries, skateboarders are also at the risk of sustaining head and facial trauma as well as fractured and broken bones. Case in point, hip hop artist and avid skateboarder Lil Wayne suffered a skateboarding injury of his own this week that resulted in nine stitches just above his eye.
