The victim was walking along the 1700 block of Ruxton Lane at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday when he was stung 400-to-500 times, according to medical personnel.

It is believed the bees were agitated by a fumigator that was in the process of trying to exterminate their hive in the attic space of a nearby apartment.

The fumigator fled to avoid being stung and the man just happened to be in the area when the bees attacked, according to Redondo Beach police Sergeant Phil Keenan.

The victim was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital, in Torrance, and was in stable condition.

The Los Angeles Vector Control has set up warning signs and cordoned off the area.

A private exterminator was expected to remove the hive.

It is not know if the attack involved Africanized Bees.
