Selena was killed back in 1995 but that doesn’t mean we won’t be able to hear anymore of her music. According to her father Abraham Quintanilla, fans could hear unheard Selena music and soon! Quintanilla says that he currently owns about 50 previously unheard Selena songs and he plans on releasing them. The songs were recorded when Selena was still a teenager and will probably be a little different than the older Selena. No word yet as to when the songs will be published. Do you think it’s too late for new Selena music 16 years after her death? Read more details and let us know what you think after the jump.

Selena fans, rejoice! Brand new music is coming your way, according to Abraham Quintanilla, Selena’s father:
“I own 5 Selena tape masters from pre-EMI times. There’s a total of 50 songs. We picked 10 of those songs and we’re currently working on refreshing the music. We want to rejuvenate their sound, bring them up-to-date.”
The remaining 40 songs will also be released eventually, but for the time being you can expect the new CD to come out early next year.
There are always ethical and artistic issues when an artist’s unreleased work is published post-mortem. The music was recorded when Selena was in her mid-teens. It possibly sounds very different from the more mature sound we got to know her by, and she obviously has no artistic input on how these masters are put together. Pick any artist who went before their time (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Miles Davis, Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur) and then had posthumous releases. There’s always the question: Why weren’t these tracks published during their careers, were they not happy with them? On the other hand, Selena’s tracks could also offer insight into her development as an artist, while simply giving her fans more to savor.
