(Telegraph)–
A crowd of around 300 people clashed with officers near to Tottenham police station. Missiles, including Molotov cocktails, rocks and fire extinguishers, were thrown at the officers.
A bookmaker’s shop was set alight and other shop windows were smashed. Stores in the area were looted, with people seen pushing away shopping trolleys full of stolen goods. Some of the rioters were said to look as young as seven years old.
At one point, a wheelie bin was set ablaze and pushed into lines of officers.
Later half a dozen fire engines arrived in convoy at the scene.
Police on horseback near the police station had thunderflashes thrown at them, and chased the rioters up the road.
The disturbances followed a peaceful protest in which around 120 people marched from the Broadwater Farm area to the police station.
They were voicing concerns over the death on Thursday of Mark Duggan, 29, who was killed after an apparent exchange of fire with officers. After the shooting, a police officer’s radio was found to have a bullet lodged in it, suggesting he may have narrowly escaped being struck.
Police had been attempting to carry out an arrest under Operation Trident, which deals with gun crime in the black community, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the death.
