New York Rangers forward Sean Avery is out on bail after he was arrested in California on allegations he shoved an officer at his Hollywood Hills home.

Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Jorge Pardo tells City News Service that a neighbor’s noise complaint sent police to the home at about 1 a.m. local time Friday.

Pardo said Avery answered the front door, shoved an officer and slammed the door but cooperated when officers knocked a second time.

The officer wasn’t injured.

Avery, 31, was booked on suspicion of battery on a police officer. He was released about seven hours later after posting $20,000 bail.

“We will discuss the matter with Sean and have no further comment at this time,” the Rangers said in a statement.

Avery created a stir this spring when he appeared in a commercial supporting the same-sex marriage proposal in New York.

Avery, who also has played for the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars, was suspended six games in 2008 for making crude comments about ex-girlfriends dating other hockey players.

Former NHL player Georges Laraque, who is black, accused Avery in 2005 of making a racial slur, which Avery denied.

And Avery had an infamous encounter with Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, waving his stick and hands in front of Brodeur during a game in April 2008. The NHL responded quickly, saying such actions warranted an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — a rule now dubbed the Avery rule.
