Larry Stone noticed that Lake County Jail’s payphone added money rather than taking it off.
He made another call to check he was not seeing things and then made 77 more until he racked up $1,250.
He used the cash to pay his way out of the cells, a probe by the county sheriff found.
However, officers soon learned of his wheeze as dozens of other prisoners tried to do the same.
Stone was rearrested within hours.
He is now facing additional charges of scheming with intent to defraud and grand theft over the calls.
