Tiger Woods will play in the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio next week, ending an 11-week break to heal injuries to his left leg.

Woods used his website to announce his return today and posted on his Twitter account that he’s “feeling fit and ready to tee it up at Firestone next week. Excited to get back out there!”

Woods returns with as much uncertainty about his future as ever.

Along with questions about the strength of his left knee and Achilles’, Woods embarks on his latest comeback with a new caddy after firing New Zealander Steve Williams last week,

But basketball legend legend Michael Jordan has no doubt  Tiger Woods will return to the height of his powers.

Jordan, a social golf partner, says Woods has finally acknowledged his issues and will hit back hard when he gets back on the course.

“I think he’s waiting to explode again,” said Jordan, the assistant captain of the US team at November’s Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.

“A wounded dog has a tough time trying to keep winning battles.

“And because the battle was a lot tougher than I thought even Tiger realised a while ago, he needs to heal before he gets back into these battles again.”

Woods’ most recent tournament win was the JBWere Masters at Melbourne’s Kingston Heath in November 2009, just days before a sex scandal brought his world crashing down.

He has since suffered a very public divorce and debilitating leg injuries that have taken him out of the top 20 in the world rankings for the first time since January 1997.

Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles and was a 14-time All-Star, said Woods was giving himself time to heal.

“He was very fragile over the last year, he was dealing with a lot of different things, mentally as well as physically,” Jordan said from Chicago yesterday.

“But I think he’s come to the conclusion that he needs to heal himself before he can actually be aggressive again.”

Jordan himself went through some harrowing mid-career dramas, most notably his father’s murder in 1993.

“The biggest thing is that I’ve always – and I’m pretty sure Tiger has, too – used sport as a therapeutic tool,” he said. “Once you’re inside the lines, you can focus on what your jobs are and what you’re doing on the court, or for him the course.

“The problem for him was that he wasn’t physically capable of getting inside those lines and doing those things. I think he’s been somewhat fragile mentally and physically.

“When I went through those issues, once I got on to the basketball court that became a therapeutic thing for me where I was able to forget all those other things.

“Once I finished playing basketball, I came out with a better understanding of the decisions I had to make.

“He doesn’t have that now. Now he’s going through something that’s totally different, totally new for him and he’s now acknowledging that. He needs to get healthy, mentally and physically, before he can really attack that.

“And it is such a mental game, so he has to be right again in that sense and I believe he will get there again.”

Woods, who is injured and not playing, remains a strong hope of coming to Australia for the Presidents Cup.
