After a dinner with Giants coach Tom Coughlin on Friday night, Burress plans to fly to Pittsburgh to meet with coach Mike Tomlin, sources said.

Sources believe only a productive, fence-mending meeting between Burress and Coughlin stands between the wide receiver rejoining the Giants and making more than $10 million over two years. The Giants have talked of paying Burress in the range of $10.5 million over two years, approximately 60 percent in salary and bonuses with the balance earned on play-time performance and incentives. Terms remain negotiable, sources said.

However, Tomlin expects to make his own strong sales pitch for Burress to join the Steelers, who made him a first-round draft choice out of Michigan State in 2000, sources added.

The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets also have expressed varying degrees of interest in Burress, according to sources.

Burress traveled to New York on Tuesday night via a private jet courtesy of billionaire Seth Bernstein, who is serving as an unofficial broker between the wide receiver and the Giants, sources said. Bernstein is CEO of Empower Software Solutions and is a friend of Giants co-owner Steve Tisch.

ORIGINAL STORY:

According to team sources, the Giants are in talks for a possible return of wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

The Giants want to see where Burress is mentally before they decide to make any moves.  Plaxico was released from prison in June after serving nearly two years for weapons charges.  Plaxico also had a turbulent relationships with Giants coach Tom Coughlin and he was seen as a rebel.  In discussing his relationship with Coughlin, Burress said “”Some things that I didn’t agree with, with the way he went about things. And the only way to show my way was to just rebel. Is that who I am? No.”

Coughlin has however agreed to meet and sit down with Burress.  Plaxico was selected eighth overall in the 2000 draft, he has 505 receptions for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns in nine seasons.  Burress also caught the winning touchdown in the 2008 Super Bowl as the Giants stunned the Patriots, dealing New England its only loss that season. Burress was no doubt important to the Giants and may improve their season if he is readded to the roster.
