A semi-coherent Kevin Gonterman – missing for two days – was discovered in the muck by a volunteer searcher in a remote area about 25 miles southeast of Houston, officials said.

Gonterman disappeared on Saturday night after police were called to his League City, Texas, house over an alleged domestic disturbance, The Houston Chronicle reported.

His girlfriend called police to report Gonterman missing after he didn’t return on Sunday. Members of Texas Equusearch joined the hunt on Monday, and one volunteer spotted the open manhole cover about 150 feet off the closest road.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Gonterman managed to pop the cover and climb inside, but couldn’t find his way back to freedom – there was no ladder in the manhole, officials said. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

And what was he doing in the manhole?

“Because he fled his house, we were assuming that he was trying to hide from the police, but we don’t know that for sure,” Sgt. John Jordan of the League City police told the Chronicle.

Gonterman is already facing a 60-day jail term for failing two drug tests while on probation for a 2010 DWI conviction.
