The Philadelphia Eagles are interested in signing Brett Favre to back up quarterback Michael Vick, Philadelphia television station WCAU reported Saturday night.
WCAU’s Howard Eskin, who also is a noted talk radio host in the city, said it was “possible” the Eagles would try to bring in the 41-year-old Favre, who has indicated he is retiring from football.
When contacted by The Philadelphia Inquirer later Saturday, an Eagles source did not deny Eskin’s report, saying only that signing Favre is a “long shot” and that “a lot of things would need to fall into place” for it to happen.
One of those things presumably would be the Eagles trading current backup Kevin Kolb. A deal is expected to happen shortly after the NFL lockout ends. The Arizona Cardinals have been linked most strongly to a Kolb trade.
Another thing would be Favre accepting a backup role. The Inquirer speculates Favre might be willing to do it in Philly because of his ties to coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. The two worked with Favre in Green Bay when they were on Mike Holmgren’s staff. Plus, the Inquirer posits, Favre might see the Eagles as an avenue to winning another Super Bowl ring.
Eskin reported that he received no comment from Favre’s agent, Bus Cook.
