Kris Jenkins’ star-crossed career came to an end Wednesday when the free agent nose tackle announced his retirement on his Facebook page.
“Wanted to let you all know that I have loved the support and respect that you all have given me throughout my career,†Jenkins wrote. “But it is time for the torch to be passed to the younger players. I am going to hang up the cleats! The mind is always willing to play but my body deserves the rest. Thank you for the (opportunities) to play Carolina and New York.â€
The 6-5, 360-pound Jenkins was a force when healthy. The four-time Pro Bowler was released by the Jets in February after he suffered season-ending ACL injuries in two consecutive seasons. Jenkins was done for last year after getting injured in the first half of Gang Green’s season opener against the Ravens.
Jenkins was a run-stuffing anchor in the middle of Gang Green’s defensive line in 2008 after the Jets acquired him from the Carolina Panthers for two draft picks (third and fifth-rounders). He had 50 combined tackles en route to his final Pro Bowl berth that season.
Jenkins suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 6 in 2009 before getting shelved again in the first week of the 2010 season. In all, he suffered three ACL injuries in his 10-year career.
