“Don’t worry guys,” Rooney reassured friends and family members just minutes before the fatal flash. “Lighting never strikes twice.”

According to the report, Rooney and cousin Scott Digeralamo stepped away from a family get-together to smoke cigars beneath a nearby tree Sunday as the storm blew in.

The lightning struck the ground near the pair, fatally injuring the 54-year-old Rooney – who died five days later. His cousin survived the deadly bolt.

When Rooney was just 5, his father was killed by a lightning strike while fishing in Fortescue, N.J., the web site said.
