“The clerk did a tremendous job of remaining calm and being able to keep the suspect calm,” Sgt. Mark Donaldson of the Vacaville Police Department told reporters. “She was a very brave woman.”

The incident began around 2:40 a.m. Sunday when Patricia Wright entered the lobby of a Super 8 in Vacaville, about 35 miles west of Sacramento.

Authorities said the 32-year-old was waving around a loaded .38-caliber semiautomatic. The clerk quickly called 911, then tried to ease the woman’s nerves.

Police surrounded the motel, then talked with both the clerk and Wright via telephone. At that point Wright admitted taking both marijuana and ecstasy, Donaldson said.

After nearly 20 minutes the clerk convinced the woman to put her gun down. She surrendered to officers outside.

Wright, who was a guest at the motel, was charged with multiple counts, including possession of a loaded firearm in a public place. Her boyfriend, also at the motel, was questioned by police but not charged.

Motel guests were largely unaware of the incident, which was limited to the lobby, police said.
