Kenyan runner Nicholas Manza Kamakya stormed home in a record time to win Australia’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon Sunday, but missed out on a $27,000 bonus by a one second.
Menza, 26, finished in two hours, 10 minutes and one second to break the 22-year-old race record and take the $10,000 winner’s check, but narrowly missed the prize for breaking 2:10.
He beat home fellow Kenyan Albert Kiplagat Matebor by just two seconds and said he was not overly disappointed at missing out on the cash.
“I’m just happy. For me it’s so nice [to win],” said Manza.
“It’s very special for me because it’s my first time in Australia and I’m happy because I’ve run the course record.”
In the women’s race, the $27,000 bonus was also close for Ethiopian winner Goitetom Haftu Tesema, who missed the 2:30 cutoff by eight seconds.
