Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, beating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
In the fourth set, Djokovic broke Nadal’s serve to go up 2-0 and had a chance to go up 3-0 on his own serve. Nadal broke back to make it 2-1 and evened the set at 3-3. But Djokovic got another key service break to go up 5-3 and won the championship when a Nadal return sailed long.
After breaking Nadal’s serve at 5-4 to win the first set, Djokovic dominated the second, taking the first three games and breaking the defending champion twice more for a commanding two sets to none lead.
Nadal roared back in the third, breaking Djokovic’s serve twice.
Djokovic assured himself of the top ranking just by reaching the final. He opened the season with 41 straight wins, including the Australian Open title, but his 43-match winning streak came to an end against Roger Federer in the French Open semifinals.
The victory over Nadal improved Djokovic’s record in 2011 to 48-1, with five of the wins coming against the Spaniard in finals — two on hard courts, two on clay and now one on grass.
