MTV, a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), delivered four of the top 15 original cable series of 2Q 2011, more than any other network, and marked its sixth consecutive quarter of growth, with ratings up 6% over the last year period. In addition, MTV scored four of the top five cable telecasts of the second quarter, which saw broad growth across the network’s diverse lineup of established reality franchises, newer hit reality series and scripted launches.
MTV’s top original cable series of the second quarter were “American’s Best Dance Crew” (#10), “Real World: Las Vegas” (#11), “16 and Pregnant” (#12) and “Teen Wolf” (#13). In addition, MTV had four of the top five cable telecasts of 2Q 2011: “Teen Mom 2” (#2), “Jersey Shore Reunion” (#3), “2011 MTV Movie Awards” (#4), and “Teen Mom 2: Check-Up Special” (#5).
Ratings gains in the second quarter were fueled by a 53% jump in MTV’s “Ten Spot,” the network’s branded Monday-Thursday/10pm-to-11pm destination. Established reality franchises “America’s Best Dance Crew,” “Real World: Las Vegas” and “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” all marked double digit ratings increases over their prior seasons. Hit series “16 and Pregnant” was Tuesday’s #1 original cable series for F12-34 during its run, and MTV’s newest scripted series “Teen Wolf” is already a top original cable series with P12-34.
MTV’s sibling network MTV2 closed out second quarter as its highest rated in history with P12-34 (+11% from 2Q10) and Total Viewers (+14% from 2Q10). Among M12-34, it was MTV2’s highest rated second quarter ever, and MTV2 saw rating increases with its returning series “Sucker Free Countdown” (+6% from last season) and “Funk Flex Full Throttle” (+10% from last season), and time period improvement with its new series “Bellator Fighting Championships” (+11%).
