America’s First Lady Michelle Obama has paid tribute to the victims of apartheid during a visit to Soweto, the township that was at the centre of South Africa’s struggle against white minority rule.

Speaking to young women from across Africa, Mrs Obama said the successful fight against apartheid along with the American civil rights movement should inspire them to overcome the problems of today, such as HIV or violence against women.
