6-year-old boys mother credits Kansas City Chiefs tight end Leonard Pope with saving her son’s life at a pool party on Saturday.

“The fact that (Pope) is normally at camp and could have been in Kansas City just proved to me that he was placed here to save my son from drowning, and I thank God that he was here,” Anne Moore told the Americus Times-Recorder. “He truly lived up to his nickname ‘Champ’ because he was truly a champion for me and my son this past weekend.”

Moore said that her son Bryson was attending a cousin’s birthday party and that about five other children were in the pool at the same time when she noticed her son, whom she said does not know how to swim, struggling in the water. In an interview with the NFL Network posted on NFL.com, Pope said he “didn’t see (Bryson’s) head anymore. I just saw his hands above the water.”

That’s when the 6-foot-8 Pope, wallet, cell phone, clothes and all, jumped in and pulled Bryson out.

“I was on my way out of the house, and I went for it,” Pope said.

The 27-year-old Pope has played five NFL seasons, the past two with Kansas City. He spent his first three years with Arizona after being selected in the third round, 72nd overall, out of the University of Georgia. He has 78 career receptions, including 10 last season.
