NASA’s last shuttle mission will have an Apple iPhone  aboard , making this the iPhones first mission into space(on the shuttles final) .  Along the trip the iPhone will track the radiation levels, along with its altitude and orbital location.
Apple will be installing a new OS on to the phone called Spacelab. The iPhone plans on taking flight on July 8th this year, while its the firt time the phone has taken flight, the process alone to get the phone onto the space shuttle is one of the longest. Going though a 2 year process, the device got approved for flight because the phone itself can not give off any dangerous gasses in recycled air, or interfere with the flights electronics. The iPhone will be aboard the flight until September, where after it will be taken back to earth for analysts by NASA.
“We’re attempting to show how a commercial product that millions of people use can function as spaceflight hardware,†Rishikof said. “Once you demonstrate that it’s capable, you begin to wonder what else is possible.â€
