Devon Butler, a junior Northern Illinois University linebacker, was critically wounded Tuesday when shots were fired from a car at an apartment in DeKalb.
Authorities said the apartment was targeted because of a drug deal but emphasized that there was no indication that Butler was involved in the transaction or even knew about it. Two people have been arrested.
Butler was visiting the apartment Tuesday morning when shots were fired from a car shortly before noon, according to DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen. One of the shots crashed through a window of the apartment and struck Butler, he said.
“Investigators determined the apartment was targeted as a result of a drug transaction that occurred earlier Tuesday,” the chief said.
Butler, from Pembroke Pines, Fla., was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was listed in critical condition.
“All our thoughts and prayers as a team and as a coaching staff right now are with Devon,†said NIU football coach Dave Doeren, who was at the hospital today. “He’s a member of our family and the most important thing is his health.â€
Doeren said he has been in close contact with Butler’s family.
