Boston’s David Ortiz has set the major league record for RBIs by a designated hitter.
Ortiz drove in a run with a groundout in the fourth inning Saturday night against Texas. That gave him 1,004 career RBIs as a DH and broke the mark that had been held by Edgar Martinez.
Ortiz hit a two-run homer in second inning, matching Martinez with 1,003 RBIs.
For the first time in his career, Ortiz has homered in each of the first two games of the season. He had a solo homer in the opener Friday, which was his 350th career homer.
In his 1,598 career games with Minnesota and Boston since 1997, Ortiz had 1,174 career RBIs. He has played 248 games as a first baseman.
