A Las Vegas gambler who stands to win $50,000 if Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) wins the NCAA title Monday has a nervous weekend ahead.
And the Las Vegas Hilton’s casino’s sports book was also sweating the NCAA results since the $10 bet it took on VCU at the start of the season — at the odds of 5,000-to-1 — now appears to have a good chance of success.
“We definitely have some liability associated with VCU winning the title,” the Hilton book manager Jay Kornegay told Covers.com. “I can’t say I’m comfortable. There were more significant bets on VCU, but most of the time it’s just little stuff. A guy will bet like $20 because he or his girlfriend went to school there, but it doesn’t have to be a very large wager to hurt at those kinds of odds.”
The Rams must beat Butler University in Houston on Saturday night to advance to Monday night’s final at Reliant Stadium.
VCU would then have to beat the winner of the other semi-final, which features the University of Connecticut versus the University of Kentucky, to cut down the nets in Houston.
