Kevin Harvick pulled a magic act at Fontana.
The 29 car passed Jimmie Johnson on the last lap of the Auto Club 400 and held on for his first victory of the season.
Johnson took second while Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five.
While Kyle Busch has been the hot driver in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup series, the fact that he was driving his backup Toyota took a little air out of his attempt to win back-to-back races.
But Kyle just kept pulling away from Tony Stewart and on Lap 158, he held a 3.38 second lead over Tony Stewart. With 45 laps to go, track favorite Jimmie Johnson was in fourth behind Kevin Harvick, but he the 48 car kept stalking the lead.
Tony Stewart never fell lower than 13th and with 34 laps to go, Stewart had cut Busch’s lead to 1.36 seconds. Both Stewart and Busch pitted at the same time, setting the showdown for the checkered flag.
The first caution of the day was out on Lap 74 for debris on the track. While all of the cars on the lead lap pitted, Tony Stewart didn’t. His tires only had six laps on them at the time, so he stayed out and took the lead with teammate Ryan Newman in second place.
