Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne found out quickly Friday that things can change in a hurry.

Bayne slid into the Turn 3 wall in the first practice session at Phoenix International Raceway. The No. 21 Ford suffered major damage to the right front quarter panel, so Bayne will go to a backup car.

“When we left pit road I told our guys the brakes weren’t working right,” Bayne said. “I went into the turn and the brakes just locked up. The brake pressure didn’t feel right and I went into the wall. Something just went wrong.”

The Wood Brothers Racing team had to put an engine in the backup car, so Bayne wasn’t able to continue in the first practice.

“Man, I hate it,” Bayne said. “We were coming off such a good week.”

Bayne will not have to start in the back of the field for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race because the accident happened before qualifying, which is Saturday.
