Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh joined teammate Juwan Howard in giving Derrick Rose the edge over LeBron James for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award.

Asked about Howard’s comments on WMVP-AM’s ‘‘Silvy & Waddle Show’’ on Wednesday, Bosh agreed that Rose meets the literal definition of the award better than James.

‘‘Just looking at what he’s done with this team and looking at their record and how improved they are as a team and how improved he is as a player, I think it’s close. But I would give it to Derrick if I had a vote,’’ Bosh said Thursday after the Heat’s shootaround at the United Center in preparation for tonight’s game against the Bulls.

‘‘He’s playing well. He’s playing like the best point guard in the league and the best player in the league. He’s THE most valuable player, if you really think about it. You take him out of the lineup, there’s no telling what you’d get.’’

Rose is averaging 25.0 points and 8.2 assists per game this season. The Bulls, who are 38-16 overall, are 0-1 this season when Rose does not play. They lost 98-97 to the Nuggets in Denver on Carmelo Anthony’s 23-footer at the buzzer on Nov. 26, when neither Rose nor Carlos Boozer played for the Bulls. Rose’s backup, C.J. Watson, scored 33 points on 11-of-22 shooting, with three assists.

James is averaging 26.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game this season. The Heat are 42-15 overall, but 0-2 without James. They lost to the Nuggets 130-102 in Denver on Jan. 13; and they lost to the Bulls 99-96 at the United Center on Jan. 15.
