A search team recovered a body believed to be the brother of Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reedfrom the Mississippi River on Tuesday. An autopsy will be performed Wednesday to confirm the identity of the body.

“It’s been tough, but God is good,” Ed Reed told WDSU-TV in New Orleans. “To have found our brother today brings closure and knowing that he’s in a better place.”

Texas EquuSearch on Sunday had located what it believed to be the body of Brian Reed, 28, tangled in debris about 20 miles northwest of New Orleans. But Kenner Police Lt. Wayne McInnis said divers were unable to find it.

McInnis said Tuesday that the body was found less than a quarter mile from where Brian Reed went into the river.

“It’s been a long, painful and difficult search, and we have recovered some human remains that are certainly in the general area where Brian went in the water, and now all I’m going to say now is it’s up to the medical examiner to go ahead and determine positive identification,” Tim Miller, director of Texas EquuSearch, told WWL-TV in New Orleans.

The search had been halted Monday after rain moved into the area. They were looking in the area where the man believed to be Brian Reed went in on Jan. 7, when he apparently jumped into the river after being confronted by a deputy sheriff.

Karen Reed, the mother of Ed and Brian Reed, said investigators found her son’s shoes and jacket. She said the car the man ran from belonged to another brother.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said a deputy spotted a parked car that matched the description of one reported stolen. When the deputy told the man believed to be Brian Reed to put his hands behind his back, he bolted and ran into the river, authorities said.
