We won’t keep you in suspense. According to a new survey from Badoo.com, the largest international social dating network with 87 million users, the best pickup line in the world is . . .

“You have beautiful lips.”

Badoo looked at the opening lines used in more than 190,000 online flirtations in 10 different languages during one month, and analyzed which bon mots landed more dates.

The lips line was rated the best overall, because it works with women across all cultures. But other lines worked better regionally. Here’s how the most successful pickup lines break down by country:

  • Canada and Germany: “You have beautiful skin.”
  • USA, France, and Italy: “You dress beautifully.”
  • UK and Turkey: “You have beautiful legs.”
  • Spain: “You have beautiful hair.”
  • Portugal and Netherlands: “You have beautiful ears.”
  • Sweden: “You have a beautiful figure.”
  • Russia: “You have a beautiful nose.”
  • Poland: “You have beautiful arms.”

That left us wondering two things: 1) What’s wrong with the Portuguese and Dutch? Ears? Really? And 2) Would the lips line actually work in the United States?

“I think it would have to be delivered in a very non-sexual way to be effective,” says Ian Kerner, Ph.D., a sex therapist and founder of GoodInBed.com. Meaning: No allusion to oral sex. (Drat! Maybe that’s what we’ve been doing wrong.)

But Kerner has an even better idea: Don’t use a pickup line at all.

“I hate when I hear all sorts of seduction rules, like ‘show no weakness, be cocky, insult her if she’s pretty,’” Kerner says. “That’s all a load of crap. In most situations, the woman has already sized you up and made a decision about whether or not she’s interested before you’ve finished speaking.” (Sound familiar? Instead, Kerner suggests, put yourself in situations where you don’t have to use a line—if you’ve already got something in common with her, that makes it easier to stir up a conversation. That’s why bookstores are such a great place to meet women. It’s also why group activities work so well, whether you join a coed sports team or a volunteer organization.”When people are working toward a shared outcome, they’re more likely to grow closer together,” says Malcolm Parks, Ph.D., author of Personal Relationships & Personal Networks.
