Braylon Edwards’ next court date in the proceedings stemming from a Sept. 21 arrest for DWI has been moved from Jan. 11 to March 7, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and Edwards’ attorney, Peter Frankel.

Frankel characterized it as the normal course of business, and said in an e-mail that the two sides are still working on resolutions and dealing with discovery issues. A judge granted Edwards’ request to push back the hearing.

Edwards was stopped early on the morning of Sept. 21 for excessively tinted windows on his Land Rover and was asked to take a breath test. Police at the scene said the New York Jets receiver’s blood alcohol level was .16, or twice the legal limit in New York.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan benched Edwards for the first quarter of the team’s subsequent game against Miami as punishment for the DWI.

Edwards apologized to the team and his fans.

The receiver, in his second year with the Jets, had a pivotal 18-yard catch in the final drive during the Jets’ 17-16 win over the Colts in an AFC wild-card game on Saturday.

At the time of his arrest, Edwards was on probation in Ohio for an October 2009 incident outside a Cleveland nightclub. Then with the Browns, Edwards pleaded no contest to aggravated disorderly conduct after allegedly punching a man. He was given 18 months probation.

If found guilty of the DWI charge, Edwards could be compelled to return to Cleveland to see if he has violated the terms of his probation. If he is found in violation he could face six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

There could also be consequences from the NFL. If found guilty, Edwards would be subject to the league’s personal conduct policy, which could mean a fine and a suspension.

Edwards is playing under a one-year tender with the Jets, and will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
