Economic downturns aren’t good for a marque like Maserati. Along with such attributes as elegant, exciting and attractive, they could also be called excessive. After all, there are less flashy cars on the market. That’s why Maserati’s sales in the United States fell by nearly half last year, but that was before the new GranTurismo Convertible (known as the GranCabrio overseas) came along.

Now that the Trident’s line-up has grown to include the critically acclaimed four-seat convertible, sales have gone back up by about as much as they dropped in the first place. Credit that to the economy beginning to recover? Maybe, but according to reports, sales of the GranTurismo coupe and Quattroporte sedan in the U.S. have yet to bounce back to their pre-recession levels, leading to just one conclusion.

The GranTurismo Convertible has, in fact, been such a runaway success for Maserati that the model is completely sold out in the U.S., leaving the kind of waiting list once reserved for even more exotic supercars like those from sister-company Ferrari.
