‘TIS THE SEASON OF MIRACLES
The last traces of Giants Stadium have been gone from the Meadowlands since June. But the ghosts remain. And not (apparently) the one that belongs to Jimmy Hoffa. But (apparently) the ones that belong to soul-crushing home defeats at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles. Specifically:
October 19, 1978
– The (Original) Miracle at the Meadowlands came after the Giants led 17-12 with 31 seconds remaining. 30 of those seconds remained on the play clock. But quarterback Joe Pisarcik fumbled the exchange with Larry Csonka, and the ball bounced to defensive back Herm Edwards. And yes, Herm took it to the house for the game-winning touchdown.
November 20, 1988
– The Eagles scored a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. It tied the game and they held on to force overtime. And in overtime, they lined up for a potential 30-yard game-winning field goal. Potential, because the Giants blocked the kick. And it went right into the hands of the Eagles’ Clyde Simmons. And yes, Clyde took it to the house for the game-winning touchdown.
December 3, 1989
– The Eagles and Giants were tied at 17 in the fourth quarter when Philly faced a third-and-long at their own two. So Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham punted. Yes, it was third down. And yes, the punt went 91 yards. And yes, Giants quarterback Phil Simms was sacked by Mike Golic. And yes, Simms fumbled. And yes, the Eagles recovered. And yes, Keith Byars took it to the house for the game-winning touchdown.
October 19, 2003
– The Giants were leading the Eagles 10-7 with 1:16 left when they punted to Brian Westbrook, who fielded it 84 yards away from the end zone. And yes, Brian took it to the house for the game-winning touchdown.
No wonder they wanted to tear that place down. So they built a new stadium, but they built it in the Meadowlands, and so a new miracle took its place in line. Specifically:
December 19, 2010
– The Eagles scored a franchise-record 28 points in the fourth quarter. In fact, all 28 of those points came within the last eight minutes. And the last of them came after the Giants were forced to punt with mere seconds left. But they weren’t forced to punt it to DeSean Jackson. But they did, and he fielded it 65 yards away from the end zone. And yes, DeSean took it to the house for the game-winning touchdown.
Meanwhile, Bill Cowher says he’d like to coach the Giants. Just in case, well, you know.
