Quarterbacks tend to refrain from throwing the ball in the direction of Darrelle Revis because of his vaunted coverage skills.
Mike Wallace isn’t a quarterback, and he isn’t afraid of the Jets’ All-Pro cornerback, who will more than likely be matched up against Wallace during Sunday’s game at Heinz Field.
“He is just another guy,” Wallace said. “He is a real good player, but hey, I’m a real good player myself. I don’t care about nobody out there. I am not afraid of nobody and don’t back from nobody.”
Yes, that even means Revis, who allowed a total of four catches for 54 yards in the three games following the Jets’ bye week. The former Pitt standout shut down Detroit’s Calvin Johnson and Green Bay’s Greg Jennings, and Cleveland’s Colt McCoy threw in Revis’ direction just three times the next week.
Revis limited arguably the best receiver in the game — Houston’s Andre Johnson — to four catches and 35 yards the week after the Browns game.
“Whoever comes out and lines up is who I am working with the whole day,” Wallace said.
Wallace’s 20.6 yards per catch is second in the NFL, and he leads the Steelers with 946 yards and eight touchdowns.
One advantage Wallace might have is using his speed to go deep. Revis has allowed nearly double the yards per catch from a season ago.
“I don’t know,” said Wallace about if Revis can keep up with his speed. “He’s a pretty good player. We will see Sunday if he can or not. Like I said, I really don’t care who it is. I don’t back down from nobody. I never have and never will.”
