Ben Roethlisberger broke his nose when he was hit in the face by Ravens lineman Haloti Ngata during a pass attempt. The Steelers announced that Roethlisberger had suffered a bloody nose, but in addition to bleeding profusely, Roethlisberger’s nose looked to be crooked when he came to the Steelers sideline.

After the game, Roethlisberger confirmed that his nose was broken, saying “a big arm got in and hit me and broke it.”

The play happened on a third-down incompletion. Roethlisberger spent the ensuing Ravens possession on the bench, holding a towel over the nose while trainers attended to him. He returned to the field when the Steelers got the ball back, though his nose was badly swollen.

“I had a couple broken noses,” NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth, an ex-NFL player, said. “But I never had one where my nose was turned sideways like that one.”

Roethlisberger entered Sunday already hobbled, courtesy of a foot injury he sustained in Week 12 at Buffalo. The Steelers said that injury was a sprain, but a report out of Pittsburgh earlier in the week indicated Roethlisberger had actually suffered a break.
