Patriots defensive players Gary Guyton and Myron Pryor have each been fined $7500 by the NFL for their hits on Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre last Sunday.
According to a league spokesman, both were fined for “unnecessary roughness; specifically, on a pass play, he unnecessarily struck the quarterback in the head and neck area.”
Guyton was flagged for his helmet-to-helmet hit; Pryor was not.
It is something of a surprise that Pryor was docked for the hit, considering that it looked legal on replays — Pryor’s helmet hit Favre’s shoulder and then slid upward toward his chin on impact — and former NFL officiating czar Mike Pereira, writing for FoxSports.com, said that it was a “perfectly legal” hit. A league source indicated to the Globe yesterday that he would not be fined.
Pryor’s tackle left Favre, who still wears a hard chin cup on his helmet, bloodied and needing several stitches.
