Last night the Giants took home their first league championship since moving west. But that’s not the really important outcome of the win. For San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom, the win means more than just city pride and the Commissioner’s Trophy, it means: he’s getting a whole heaping helping of Texas ‘cue.
When the games began, Mayor Newsome and Arlington, Texas Mayor Robert Cluck made a bet on the Series. Should the Rangers win, Mayor Newsom would be send out a slew of San Francisco treats. No, no not Rice-a-Roni, but Dungeness crab, sourdough bread, Ghirardelli chocolate, and Anchor Steam beer.
However, if the Giants won, Mayor Cluck would send out barbecue from Spring Creek BBQ, which is often touted as being the best in Texas. Hickory-smoked, Texas-style barbecue means beef and a lot of it. We think that Mayor Newsom can make a perfect, harmonious meal if he adds a bottle of his city’s Anchor Steam onto the victory menu.
This isn’t Mayor Cluck’s first food-based bet. While battling with the Tampa Bay Rays put the same barbecue on the line against Florida’s mayors of Clearwater and St. Petersburg betting the Rangers would prevail in the division play-offs. Before that, Cluck made his first Spring Creek wager with Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson that his Dallas Cowboys would win the regular season opener against Washington’s Redskins. Johnson put up one of Jerry’s Seafood’s famed $38 crab bombs – an oversized crab cake. The Redskins won so Cluck dutifully shipped the vittles out to Maryland.
The tradition of betting a hometown’s food on a game is tried and true. During the 2007 series, Boston Mayor Menino and Denver Mayor Hickenlooper (who certainly wins for best mayoral name) wagered Boston fare of clam chowder, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and ice cream against a poorer showing of Denver fare: Quiznos subs and Celestial Seasonings teas (a reference to the famous tea party in Boston’s history?). We bet Mayor Menino celebrated that night with something a little stronger than the Sleepy Time Tea he received from Hickenlooper!
Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants! Eat up Mayor Newsom!
