In a week the NFL is cracking down on questionable hits with a bevy of fines, perhaps it should be no surprise one of the league’s favorite targets — Minnesota Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards — lost more money.
Edwards said today that the NFL fined him $20,000 for spearing Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber in Sunday’s 24-21 win in the Metrodome.
Edwards, who said he believed the play occurred in the third quarter, is up to four fines and $32,500 in fines this season. The total would have been $35,000 had Edwards not appealed a $5,000 fine for a late hit in an Aug. 28 preseason game against Seattle. The league reduced that fine to $2,500.
The NFL fined Edwards $10,000 for two separate plays against the Lions on Sept. 26, $5,000 for a shove that sparked a third-quarter fight and another $5,000 for hitting quarterback Shaun Hill in the head.
Edwards is clearly frustrated by the increasing fines and said the play “really wasn’t a spear.”
“It is what it is,” said Edwards, who makes $2.521 million this season. “I’m tired of talking about it.”
Edwards said the league targets defensive players without scanning the game video for dirty play from offensive players, especially linemen.
“If you’re going to fine people, fine everybody,” Edwards said. “Don’t just fine defensive guys. …Our last five games, I’m pretty sure you can find things offensive lines did to us in the league, grabbing our facemask or doing this or that.
